Columnist Leonard Pitts the highlight of Black History Month at The Citadel
Miami Herald columnist Leonard Pitts Jr. will deliver the keynote address during The Citadel’s 2006 Black History Month program.
Pitts won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary in 2004 and he is the author of “Becoming Dad: Black Men and the Journey to Fatherhood.” His syndicated column runs twice a week in The Miami Herald and also appears in newspapers across the country, including The Post and Courier in Charleston and The State in Columbia.
This year’s Black History Month theme is “Examining Contemporary Issues of the African American Family.”

| Feb. 4 | African American Society Bazaar, Mark Clark Hall Auditorium, 11 a.m. to 4 .p.m. Music by A Touch of Class Band. Also featured are the Sankofa African American Traveling Museum, Tut Tut Kemetic Group Egyptian exhibit, food, music and vendors |
| Feb. 9 | Keynote Address, Mark Clark Hall Auditorium, 6:30 p.m. Leonard Pitts Jr., Pulitzer Prize winning columnist for The Miami Herald. |
| Feb. 14 | Dramatic Performance, Grimsley Hall Auditorium, 6:30 p.m. A tribute to the oral tradition, black history and black literature rolled all in to one, the “Power of the Tongue" is a multi-media performance anchored in poems, prose pieces, soliloquies, monologues and other classic literary favorites performed by Ge’Ylah. |
| Feb. 23 | Panel Discussion, Grimsley Hall Auditorium, 6:30 p.m. Panelists will discuss some of the major issues that today’s African American families are facing. Panelists will be from the mental health, legal, religious and education sectors of Charleston County. |
