Members of 2007 Summerall Guards make debut during Corps Day
The 2007 Summerall Guards, the precision drill platoon at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, made their official debut March 18 during the 163rd birthday celebration of the founding of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets.
Each spring, rising seniors are selected by the outgoing guards for their physical stamina and drill proficiency. Membership in the Summerall Guards* is considered a high honor at the college. The platoon's purpose is to exemplify, through a unique series of movements based on the old German close order drill and performed to a silent count, the exactness and thoroughness with which The Citadel cadet is trained.
The platoon is named for General Charles P. Summerall, former Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army and president of The Citadel from 1931 until 1953.
