Baiden elected chairman of The Citadel Board of Visitors

Greenville resident Art Baiden, the retired president of the Potter Shackelford Construction Co. and a 1962 graduate of The Citadel, was elected chairman of The Citadel Board of Visitors at its annual meeting June 10. He will succeed Billy Jenkinson whose term as chairman expires on June 30.

Baiden has served as an alumni association representative on the board since 2003. He is also a past president of The Citadel Alumni Association.

In addition to his work in commercial construction, Baiden served for 35 years in the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserves, retiring in 1997 with the rank of major general. He served two tours of duty n Vietnam in addition to numerous commands in the states.

His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Purple Heart. In 1994, he received the Order of the Palmetto from Gov. Carroll Campbell for his service as commanding general of the 120th Army Reserve Command and in support of Operation Desert Storm.

Baiden holds bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering and is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College.

The board also elected Jack Douglas of Columbia as vice chairman.

Douglas, the director of core market development for Colonial Supplemental Insurance, is a 1992 graduate of The Citadel.

A former football player and member of The Citadel Athletic Hall of Fame, Douglas is chairman of the board's athletic committee.

He serves on the board of The Citadel Brigadier Foundation and is a past board member of the Columbia Area Citadel Club. Douglas is also the president of the Palmetto Chapter Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

He has also done sports reporting for South Carolina ETV and Comcast and is the football color analyst for the Benedict College Tigers Football Radio Network.
