The Citadel celebrates Darwin Week

In conjunction with Darwin Week, sponsored by the College of Charleston, The Citadel Department of Biology will host guest speaker Dr. Chris Beard at 8 p.m. Thursday Feb. 16 in Duckett Hall Auditorium.

Beard is the curator and head of the vertebrate paleontology section at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, Penn. He will discuss "The Hunt for the Dawn Monkey: Unearthing the Origins of Monkeys, Apes, and Humans."

Beard has spent more than 20 years conducting field work in North America, Asia, and Africa, searching for distant primate ancestors. In 2000 he was awarded a prestigious MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (commonly known as a "genius" award). In this talk he will focus on his work in China and Myanmar that documents a previously unknown phase in the evolution of monkeys, apes, and humans. These new fossil discoveries demonstrate that the ancestors of monkeys, apes, and humans originated in Asia millions of years earlier than paleoanthropologists had previously believed.

It is free and open to the public.
