Citadel continues Fulbright success

The Citadel is on a Fulbright roll. With his award of a Fulbright to study in Germany, senior Cadet Drew Brooks of Springfield, Va., is the 10th cadet to be granted a Fulbright from The Citadel since 1992 and the sixth cadet in five years to receive a Fulbright to study in Germany.

Cadet Drew BrooksBrooks, who originally began his cadet career as an engineering major, was recruited by Col. Al Gurganus, modern language department head and professor, to the German discipline. Gurganus recognized Brooks’ potential and began grooming him for the prestigious scholarship. Brooks is a member of the Honors Program, and he is a Citadel Scholar, that is, he is on a full academic scholarship funded by The Citadel Foundation. He is also a member of the 2006 Honor Committee.

“By acumen and ethos Drew Brooks is truly one of our best and brightest. His extraordinary intellectual ability is more than matched by his human qualities,” said Gurganus.

In Germany, Brooks will study the effects of the Roman Empire on the social class in ancient Germania—Germania is how the Romans referred to what we know today as Germany. By accepting the scholarship for the 2006-2007 academic year, Brooks is delaying admission to graduate school. He has been offered a fellowship to Georgetown University Fellowship (one of four worth $175,000 over five years) and the University of Indiana's Max Kade Fellowship. Brooks is also one of 60 outstanding students nationally to be named for the prestigious Phi Kappa Phi Graduate Fellowship of $5,000.00.

“Cadet Brooks is an outstanding example of academic success at The Citadel,” said Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa. “We are very proud of his achievements and are confident that he will go on to represent The Citadel well in all of his endeavors.”
