Surface Warfare is the backbone of the U.S. Navy. Its missions include strike warfare, amphibious (littoral) warfare, anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare. Surface warships provide a visible global presence which enables the United States to project power in support of its national interests.
The Surface Warfare Officer (SWO) in the Navy is one of the most challenging career choices you will ever make. To become successful you must master the combined roles of a junior executive and a professional naval officer. Flexibility, tenacity, intelligence, motivation, self-discipline, and complete confidence in your personal abilities are essential as you strive towards your ultimate goal -- command at sea of a Navy ship.
The opportunities available to you as a SWO are numerous. You will find yourself on the cutting edge of naval technology, working closely with superior personnel on the Navy's most advanced equipment. Imagine yourself as a weapons officer accountable for the entire shipboard arsenal of a TICONDEROGA Class AEGIS Cruiser; or as an engineering officer responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the gas turbine propulsion plant of an FREEDOM Class Littoral Combat Ship (LCS); or, finally, as a combat systems officer responsible for the proper operation of all detection and tracking systems on board an ARLEIGH BURKE Class AEGIS Guided Missile Destroyer.
