Linda K. Elksnin, Ph.D.

Professor Emerita

Dr. Elksnin joined the Citadel in 1984 to coordinate the Graduate Special Education Program, following completion of her PhD in special education at the University of Virginia. Dr. Elksnin was the first recipient of the James C. Self Award for Excellence in Graduate Teaching, and was awarded two Citadel Development Foundation Fellowships and four Citadel Faculty Achievement Awards. She was inducted into The Citadel’s honor society, Phi Kappa Phi, and the education honor society of Kappa Delta Pi. Dr. Elksnin was the first woman to serve as Chair of Faculty Senate.

Dr. Elksnin is the co-author of four books: Teaching Social-Emotional Skills at School and Home: A Guide for Teachers and Parents, Occupational Social Skills, Assessment and Instruction of Social Skills, and Educational Assessment of Learning Problems. She is the author of numerous book chapters and articles focusing on teacher-parent collaboration, transition to college and employment, assessing and teaching social-emotional skills, and the case method of instruction.

Dr. Elksnin currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Learning Disabilities, International Journal for Research in Learning Disabilities, and Exceptionality. She and Dr. Nick Elksnin served as co-editors of Assessment for Effective Intervention for 9 years. Dr. Elksnin was elected to membership of the International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities and served as President of the International Council for Learning Disabilities.

Linda has been a full time mixed-media visual artist since her retirement in 2006 ( She won the Piccolo Spoleto Poster Contest in 2012 and the North Charleston Arts Festival Design Competition in 2013. Her work has been shown throughout the Southeast.
