First-class cadet gets community service award

Cadet Maj. Harris Ligon of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. has received the Harry F. Dawley Jr. Community Service Award for 2005.

The Harry F. Dawley Jr. Community Service award is presented annually to the cadet who has had the greatest impact on community service in the Corps of Cadets in the past year. Cadet Ligon has been instrumental in the evolvement of the community service program at The Citadel. Since joining the human affairs team last year, cadet community service hours have increased from 7,228 to 17,239 a semester.

“Cadet Ligon has been the driving for that has placed the Corps of Cadets on the road to success in the community service arena,” said Col. John Rivers, interim commandant of cadets, who presented Ligon with the award during the Sept. 23 military dress parade.

A graduate of West Brunswick High School, Ligon is a senior majoring in psychology. He currently serves as regimental human affairs officer and is secretary for the Presbyterian Student Association.

Ligon is the son of Jeannie Harrell of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C., and Richard Ligon of Greer, S.C.
