New assistant commandant takes the helm

Lt. Col. Kathy Jones has been named assistant commandant for administration and coeducation at The Citadel. She replaces Col. Hedy Pinkerton who stepped down in early September.

Kathy JonesJones most recently was assistant director of admissions where she was responsible for the development and implementation of recruiting activities with specific focus on bringing qualified young women into the South Carolina Corps of Cadets. She had held that position since January 2001.

Before joining the admissions office, Jones was on active duty with the U.S. Army and assigned to The Citadel’s Army ROTC detachment as assistant professor of military science. Previously, Jones was chief of staff and the first woman executive officer of a forward deployed support battalion with a multinational peacekeeping force in Sinai, Egypt. Her other active duty assignments included overseeing training requirements of the Army Guard and Reserve Forces with the U.S. Army 5th Field Exercise Brigade; serving as operations officer with the U.S. Army Recruiting Command at Fort Meade, Md.; coordinating the fielding of modernized U.S. Army equipment to the Army National Guard deployed in Somalia, Africa, and serving as commander of a logistics company in the 18th Airborne Corps. Jones is airborne and parachute rigger qualified.

As one of three assistant commandants at The Citadel, Jones is responsible for administration and coeducation within the Corps of Cadets and acts as an advisor providing guidance to the administration on female assimilation and coeducation issues. The Citadel has admitted women since 1995.

“I look forward to participating in The Citadel educational experience that is known worldwide for fostering leadership that is grounded in academic excellence, integrity and honor characterized by respect for others,” Jones said.

Jones graduated from Youngstown State University with a bachelor of science in Applied Sciences and Bowie State University with a master of arts in counseling psychology. She is a lifelong learner pursuing additional graduate level work in counseling psychology.

Jones has been actively involved with numerous organizations over the years, including People Against Rape, Toole Military Magnet School and Parents Anonymous. She currently serves as a sexual response coordinator, company academic officer and human affairs committee member at The Citadel.
