Engineering's Ken Brannan honored for research

[@tb]Dr. Kenneth P. Brannan, head of civil and environmental engineering, with his coauthor Dr. Phillip C. Wankat of Purdue University received the 2005 American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Annual Conference Overall Best Paper Award for their paper entitled "Survey of First Year Programs."[@te]

Photo"This award recognizes high-quality papers that are presented at the ASEE Annual Conference," the association said in announcing the honor. "Papers awarded are from those that were presented at the Annual Conference in the previous year. Six outstanding conference papers are selected: one from each of the five ASEE Professional Interest Councils (PIC) and one overall conference best paper"

Dr. Brannan's paper also received the First Place, Best Paper Award in the Freshman Division and was named the best paper in PIC III for the 2005 ASEE Annual Conference. The award was presented at the 2006 Annual Conference in Chicago on June 23.

The paper is based on two surveys: one sponsored by the Freshman Programs Division of ASEE and one sponsored by the National Academy of Engineering Center for the Advancement of Scholarship on Engineering Education. Data from the two surveys provided a broad picture of the status of first-year engineering programs and should provide a valuable reference to engineering educators who work with first-year programs.

Brannan has been at The Citadel since 1986. He was promoted to the academic rank of full professor in 1999 and became the head of civil and environmental engineering in the fall of 2003.

Brannan has received numerous awards for excellence in engineering education: Thomas C. Evans, Jr. Instructional Paper Award from the Southeastern Section of the ASEE, Tony Tilman Service Award from the Southeastern Section of ASEE, C.A. Medbery Award for Teaching Excellence, Outstanding Campus Representative Zone II ASEE, and several faculty achievement awards from The Citadel. Brannan has published numerous papers in the field of engineering education.
