2002 graduate joins admissions office

Clarissa Lugo Poston, a 2002 graduate of The Citadel, has been promoted to assistant director of admissions at her alma mater. She is one of three assistant admissions directors who recruit and work with prospective cadets.

Poston is the first female graduate of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets to hold a position in The Citadel Admissions Office. From August 2004 to October 2005, Poston served as an admissions counselor, working with small groups of prospective students. While a cadet, she was an admissions telecounselor and team leader and was active with The Citadel Summer Camp in several supervisory positions. She served as captain of the women’s soccer team during her senior year.

Poston assumed her new duties, focusing on recruiting women and Hispanic students, this month. Currently 4.2 percent of the 2,012 members of the Corps of Cadets are Hispanic. Women make up 6.4 percent of the Corps.

“I believe it is important that we strive to recruit more women and Hispanic students of both genders so that we enhance the diversity of the Corps of Cadets,” Poston said. “Graduates of The Citadel go on to work in many fields in the public and private sector and in the military. The experience they gain here and the opportunities for leadership development in a diverse educational environment will be invaluable to them.”

A native of Eagle Pass, Texas, Poston received a bachelor of science in education in May 2002. She taught sixth grade social studies for a year at Alice Birney Middle School in Charleston before coming to The Citadel.

“Lisa brings a unique perspective and credibility to our office,” said Admissions Director Col. John Powell. “She can relay her recent experiences as a cadet to both our prospective female and Hispanic cadets and their families. We are excited to have her as an assistant director or admissions.”
