1990 grad joins The Citadel as general counsel

Mark C. Brandenburg has joined The Citadel as general counsel for the college.

He will be responsible for coordinating all of the college's legal matters, including labor relations, contract negotiations, environmental issues, student affairs, real estate issues, gifts and development, construction issues, records access, and litigation.

"It is an honor and a privilege to return to The Citadel to serve as the general counsel,” Brandenburg said. “The Citadel has always been a very special place to me, and I am excited about the opportunity to work at the college on a full-time basis."

Born in Atlanta, Brandenburg received a bachelor’s degree in English summa cum laude from The Citadel in 1990. He was a Star of the West Scholar and served as the vice-chairman of The Round Table and the Honor Court. He also has served as an adjunct professor of English, teaching legal writing and rhetoric of law.

Brandenburg received his law degree in 1993 from Duke University, where he was a
South Carolina Law Alumni Scholar and served on the Dean's Advisory Council. He was a law clerk for the Honorable William L. Howard, Sr., both on the Circuit Court and at the S.C. Court of Appeals.

Before coming to The Citadel, Brandenburg was in private practice in Charleston, where he focused on appellate advocacy, education law and construction litigation. He is a member of the South Carolina and Charleston County bar associations. He was admitted to the South Carolina Bar in 1993, the U. S. District Court for the District of South Carolina in 1995, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in 1996.
