Welcome to the Swain Department of Nursing
“The Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at The Citadel is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.”(http://www.ccneaccreditation.org)
Our program is dedicated to growing the next generation of nurse leaders through learning in a caring environment. We follow Swanson's Theory of Caring for developing nursing practice that is grounded in individual and family centered care using scientific evidence to establish and meet healthy goals that are set mutually by the individual, family and clinical providers. We support a healing environment that recognizes the unique needs of each individual. Quality and safe care are integrated throughout our curriculum. Our program recognizes the critical leadership role that nurses play in the complex healthcare environment.
A strong general science background provides the infrastructure necessary for students to apply theoretical principles to the delivery of nursing care. Students learn in the classroom, simulation center, and clinical settings. We offer diverse clinical experiences, using experts in each field, to provide the student with competencies that reflect the skill of a novice nurse by graduation. Standardized testing is threaded throughout the curriculum to enhance learning and further prepare the student for the nursing licensing exam following graduation.
A traditional four-year baccalaureate program is available to students in the Corps of Cadets as well as Veteran students. An evening completion program is offered for community students who have earned the required general education and prerequisite courses at another institution and wish to complete their nursing degree at The Citadel. Classes and clinical experiences for evening students are completed during evening hours and occasionally during the day and on Saturdays, and are designed for the student who needs flexibility in their learning environment. Both the Corps of Cadets and evening students earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree upon completion of the program.
Our evening program is specifically designed for the adult student who may have work and family responsibilities. It is not an accelerated program but rather an evenly paced educational experience.
