Brig. Gen. Donald A. Steven has accepted a position as the provost and vice president for academic affairs at Rider University in Lawrenceville and Princeton, N.J., beginning July 1, 2006.

In accepting his resignation, Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa, president of The Citadel, said, "I am grateful for the leadership and service that Don has provided. While we hate to see him leave, I understand from my own recent decision to come to The Citadel how important family and personal considerations are in making such changes."

Steven said the move is the right decision for him and his wife Ann because it will bring them closer to their family.

"The Citadel is a superb college with an outstanding faculty," Steven said. “My two years here have been, in many respects, the most rewarding of my entire career. From the day I first arrived, I have been inspired by the mission of this college and its leadership, and I am grateful to have been a part of this remarkable institution."

Steven, who came to The Citadel in July 2004, is the second person to hold the title of provost. He replaced Brig. Gen. Harry Carter, the former vice president for academic affairs who was named provost and dean of the college after The Citadel reorganized its academic departments into five schools.

Rosa said that a process will begin immediately to name an interim provost who can take over when Steven departs this summer.
