Visitors are always welcome at The Citadel! The campus is open to the public year-round. Whether you are a prospective student, a parent, or just passing through Charleston, the pages listed under the "Visit The Citadel" menu will help you find information specific to the campus and a guide to its attractions. Whatever your length of stay, we hope you will enjoy your time here. Directions and maps are available on this site to help you find your way around, and our virtual tour will guide you around campus while providing the rich history behind each location on campus.

The Citadel was established in 1842 by an act of the South Carolina General Assembly and was originally located on Marion Square in downtown Charleston (see Citadel History). Today the picturesque campus, which was moved in 1922 to the bank of the Ashley River, is home to 24 major buildings (see Virtual Tour) and 2,300 young men and women enrolled in 20 degree programs.

The Citadel Graduate College (CGC) offers evening and summer, coeducational undergraduate and graduate degree programs. U.S. News & World Report has consistently ranked The Citadel among the best colleges in the region in their annual surveys of "America's Best Colleges."

Campus attractions include football, baseball, and basketball games, and many other athletic events; much more sports information is available at A Citadel parade on Friday afternoon during the academic year is the best free show in Charleston. The Summerall Chapel is a shrine of religion, of patriotism and of remembrance, and is a popular site for weddings. And don't forget to visit the campus gift shop in Mark Clark Hall for all your souvenir needs.
