The Citadel to host course on writing children’s books

The Lowcountry Writing Project at The Citadel will offer a three-graduate-hour course on writing children’s books to all public and private school teachers.

Featuring a variety of local authors as guest speakers, the course is designed for teachers who would like to write and publish their own books for children. Speakers will address topics such as writing and illustrating children’s books, self-publishing versus working through a publisher, and understanding the market. Participants will also pick up tips they can share in their K-12 classrooms to help students write for different purposes and different audiences.

Sessions will meet three times each month, with evening sessions from 5 to 8 pm and Saturday sessions from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dates are January 19, 21 and 24; February 2, 4 and 9; and March 9, 11 and 23. Some sessions will be held at The Citadel, while others will be held at The Citadel Beach House on the Isle of Palms.

The cost is $250. Applications materials and additional information are available online. Applications will be accepted through December 15. For more information, contact Tom Thompson at 843-953-1418.

The Lowcountry Writing Project, an affiliate of the National Writing Project, provides professional development for public and private school teachers in all grade levels and all disciplines. Other workshops and courses are available throughout the year.
